SACRAMENTS
BAPTISM
BAPTISM
The first of the seven sacraments, and the “door” which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist constitute the “Sacraments of Initiation” by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ.
RECONCILIATION
RECONCILIATION
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9
HOLY COMMUNION
EUCHARIST / HOLY COMMUNION
“This is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die…”
CONFIRMATION
CONFIRMATION
Confirmation, together with Baptism and Holy Communion, form the Sacraments of Initiation. In the Sacrament of Confirmation, the baptized person is "sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit" and is strengthened for service to the Body of Christ.
MATRIMONY
MATRIMONY
“The matrimonial covenant, by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life, is by its nature ordered toward the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring; this covenant between baptized persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1601
HOLY ORDERS
HOLY ORDERS
Holy Orders is the Sacrament of Apostolic Ministry by which the mission entrusted by Christ to His Apostles continues to be exercised in the Church through the laying on of hands. This sacrament has three distinct degrees or “orders:” deacon, priest and bishop. All three confer a permanent, sacramental character. (CCC 1536)
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
“Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins, he will be forgiven.” – James 5:14-15
