Our Eternal Home

Walking along the graves, looking at the ice cold tomb stones, certainly provokes entire array of emotions within us.  There are so many memories hidden beneath.  Reading those last names, so many of them, some more familiar others completely foreign to us – all this makes us think – who were those people, I mean when they were still alive, what were they like.

From the number displayed beside the name, we try to count how many years ago have they died; when were they actually born, how old were they at their death.  And then me wake those comparison – he died in the same year as my friend; she was as old as my sister; he was born same year as my grandfather.  And so our imagination provokes entire array of emotions within us – remembering the past – and looking towards the unpredictable future full of uncertainties, dangers & possibilities.

Then you arrive to your destination, the person that you first intended to visit: +Anna Wojcik 1975 – 2005 “May she Rest in Peace”. (she was my big sister.)  Here I stop, staring at the picture of my dear sister, reading once more the numbers, contemplating the pretty flowers.  Here comes the real flood of sentiments.  All those years of memories engraved in my brain are now locked for all eternity in this stone.  The memories become shorter, they fade a bit, they come and go.

The purpose of visiting the cemeteries, is to relive once more the relationship we once initiated and sustained trough out our life.  The memories fade away, but the relationships, they remain forever.  We say: “Here is my sister”, “my friend”, “my husband” – those are not the titles – but the expressions of what degree of familiarity did we develop with those persons.  And hose friendships still remain strong forever.

Go there!  Walk along the tombstones, reading names and numbers, find your friend, and listen, allow the memories to flood your heart, mind and soul, and listen to them, don’t talk, just listen to that voice, just listen…

Nuestra Morada Eterna
